Ticking the bucket

Ticking the bucket

Apr 2017

Here’s my ninth answer to the list of questions in Stephanie Fox’s Travel Whispers Blogger Challenge:

9. What is top of your travel bucket list for 2017?

My travel plans for 2017 are rather tame. Two weeks in Iran, a weekend on Stewart Island in New Zealand, a family get-together near Brisbane.

I’d very much like to have some Shiraz in Shiraz, but smuggling alcohol into Iran and again on an internal flight could be risky.

I’ll be ticking off one big item. International long-haul first class travel. I’ve flown from the UK to the USA first class many years ago, but that was an unexpected upgrade. This time we’ll be travelling from Sydney to Dubai to Tehran in Emirates First Class.

Pure gold-plated glamour for twenty-four hours. Champagne, privacy suites, a shower on board, massive flat-screen entertainment, caviar snacks, first class lounges, chauffeur transfers. Should be fun!

This is because I’ve been squirrelling away frequent flyer points for a year or two. About half a million needed for the whole trip. I gained about a quarter of the amount through a bit of a boondoggle with a bank. Worth a post later on!

If I were paying cash, it would be about $11 000 each one way. That’s way out of my league, and better spent on other things anyway – like good hotels on arrival.

  1. I am so jealous!
Every time I have a horrible flight experience, I always tell myself that I’ll never fly economy again. But then I just get price tag shock and end up coming to the conclusion that a horrible flight is tolerable instead of spending an insane amount that could be put to something better.
Great that you managed to get those points though, so sit back, relax and enjoy!

    1. Thanks, Alison!

I’m a long (and a little tubby) bloke, so economy is uncomfortable for me. Lucky I love flying so much!

I usually have some sort of elite status, so I get lounge privileges, and that makes up for a bit. Fill up on champers before the flight and a lot of the pain goes away.

I’m glad I had enough points to treat my wife. She deserves a little pampering!
